Cosmic Jokers @ Summer Concert Series

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Just like it wouldn’t be the 4th of July without fireworks, it wouldn’t be a tribute to Ithaca music without Johnny Dowd! Teaming up with family members and bandmates from Neon Baptist to the present including Michael EdmondsonJennifer Edmondson, and Ben Vanderberg to bring us songs by Bobby Comstock and the Counts, The Trailer Parks, King Harvest, and a couple of surprises.

Mike shares, “We’ve chosen a pretty mixed bag even going back to the Ithaca of the 1950s. A lot of local folks may not know about Ithaca’s own Bobby Comstock and The Counts. They were trailblazers and super hip in the early Rock and Roll days.”

Something old, something new, in Downtown Ithaca concert series

July 4, 2017 by Rachel Cera in 14850 Magazine

Something new this week for the CFCU Summer Concert Series in Downtown Ithaca. This Thursday features local musicians covering the classic music of local musicians! The “We’ve Got You Covered” show is hosted by the Cosmic Joke Collective.

CJC organizer Mickie Quinn says the collaborative live performance series, with monthly events upstairs at Lot 10, is an Ithaca outcropping of a monthly artists’ salon formed in New York City in 1999. It’s been running at the downtown bar for nearly three years. Last month, a series of Cosmic Joke Collective performers covered the entire “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”to mark the album’s 50th anniversary.

This time around, CJC performers like Johnny Dowd, Jennifer Edmonson, Jennie Lowe, Vee Da Bee, Chris Bedell, Jen Cork, McKenzie Jones, Mandy Goldman, Samuel B. Lupowitz, and Dan Collins will be playing a musical tribute to other local musicians!

The free show is Thursday, July 6 at the Bernie Milton Pavilion on the Ithaca Commons from 6-8pm as part of the CFCU-sponsored concert series organized by the Downtown Ithaca Alliance. As always, beer and wine will be available for sale with ID, and if you buy a reusable cup for a buck, or buy a refill in your reusable cup, you’ll get a ticket in a drawing for a CFCU gift card at the end of the summer.

Which classic tunes from local musicians will be featured in the “We’ve Got You Covered” show? No one’s saying! Better come check it out.

Not Johnny Dowd exactly. In fact, not even remotely, but a good prelude to some fan fun we plan to post later…Poster_20170119,cosmic-joke

Along with a host of stellar Ithaca musicians covering other stellar Ithaca musicians, former Neon Baptist members Jennifer (nee Dowd) & Mike Edmondson will be covering at least a few songs from the Neon Baptist CD at the next Cosmic Joke Collective show. Mike, of course, is a current JD band member, and Jennifer traveled with the That’s Your Wife tour in 2015.

The Cosmic Joke Collective, the monthly artist salon hosted by Mickie Quinn, will present “We’ve Got You Covered, Part 1” Saturday at Lot 10. Each show has a theme, and this one will feature several local artists paying tribute to some of their musical peers.

On the bill are Leon Arguello, Josh Dolan, Jif Edmondson and Mike Edmondson, Mandy Goldman and Sam Lupowitz, Jennie Lowe and Nate Richardson.

According to Quinn, the idea for this show came about when Jennifer Middaugh (Sim Redmond Band, Bronwen Exter, Mary Lorson) had the idea to do a set of songs by local artists she had performed with as a backup singer for a future Collective show. Quinn saw the potential for this to be a theme for a whole show and presented the idea to all of the performers.

“The response was overwhelming,” she said, “So overwhelming that I had enough interest and enthusiasm to turn it into two shows.” Part 2 will take place Feb. 18 at Lot 10.

“We immediately knew we wanted to do this show,” said Lupowitz and Goldman. “There’s such a vibrant array of local music in this town, and we’re both constantly inspired by it. So many great songwriters in such a small radius — it’s impossible not to want to cover their music. Plus, so many artists in Ithaca have been so receptive to us; it’s nice to pay tribute to them this way.”

“I am a musician, but first and foremost a lover of music,” Lowe added. “I was drawn to this town because I heard that it was musician friendly! My biggest heroes are some of my friends, and I want to honor them by singing their songs.”

Among those covered will be The Blind Spots, Alan Rose, Madder Rose, Johnny Dowd, Crow Greenspun, Angie Beeler, Anna Coogan and Joe Crookston.

Over the past few years gardening and nutrition programs have begun to take off at our local schools. This event will help two of the local schools, Beverly J. Martin Elementary in Ithaca and Newfield Central Schools support continuing nutrition education, BJMs trailblazing Fresh Fruits and Vegetable Snack Program and a snack program pilot at Newfield. In addition, funds will support gardens and weekly in-school gardening activities at both schools. Not only do these programs benefit students, but they also have a big impact on the community as exemplified by the 350 lbs. of fresh organic produce grown at Newfield School and donated to the local food pantry!
