Johnny Dowd (born March 29, 1948 in Fort Worth, Texas) is an American alternative country musician. Typical of his style are experimental, noisy breaks in his songs and strong gothic (in the sense of dark and gloomy) elements in the lyrics as well as in the music. There is also a strong undercurrent of black humor and the absurd in his work.
He currently resides in Ithaca, NY.
Although his early albums were most celebrated in the alternative country community, he has never quite fit into any particular genre.
Johnny Dowd has posted a stream of A World Without Me, a track from his forthcoming new album Execute American Folklore. There are five day left (Editors note: TWO days left now!)
for his crowdfunding campaign at Indiegogo to cover the expenses for recording. He aims to raise $15,000 ($10,039 is in the pocket right now).
The headmaster of trashcan Americana will be on tour in Europe this Fall. Park Doing is the support act for the first two weeks (October 12 through 23) and Mark Lotterman for the final week (October 24 through 30).

HCTF review of That’s Your Wife on the Back of My Horse.
Also, That’s Your Wife on the Back of My Horse placed in the top third of No Depressions Readers Poll Best of 2015. Pretty good good for a musician described by Alan Taylor as giving ” … a firm and mighty middle finger to the clones of the music industry and those who created them.”

Over the past few years gardening and nutrition programs have begun to take off at our local schools. This event will help two of the local schools, Beverly J. Martin Elementary in Ithaca and Newfield Central Schools support continuing nutrition education, BJMs trailblazing Fresh Fruits and Vegetable Snack Program and a snack program pilot at Newfield. In addition, funds will support gardens and weekly in-school gardening activities at both schools. Not only do these programs benefit students, but they also have a big impact on the community as exemplified by the 350 lbs. of fresh organic produce grown at Newfield School and donated to the local food pantry!
Johnny Dowd is indeed a prolific storyteller. ‘That’s Your Wife On The Back Of My Horse’ is not background music. It’s twisted, distorted, nightmarish, strange, stuffed with dark humor and dark thoughts. Johnny does exactly what he wants, using all available tools around, guitars, drum machines, cheap vintage synths, crumpled poems and southern accent included. Johnny is this delightful uncle who says unbelievable things after a few drinks, and, of course, who’s seriously discussing about philosophy with crickets. Johnny Dowd, is the type that scares your daughter and makes a little too much noise when everyone’s gone to bed. He trades blues (Cadillac Hearse), poisoned ballads (Why?) and never gets tired. These are all reasons why the world needs Johnny Dowd now. Just trust me.
